Privacy Policy

Last updated: 22 August 2026

Overview

Top of the Pops Archive ("we", "us", "our") operates totparchive.co.uk, a fan-made archive and encyclopaedia dedicated to the BBC programme Top of the Pops. This policy explains what information we collect when you visit the site, how we use it, and the choices available to you.

If you have questions about this policy, contact us at privacy@totparchive.co.uk.

Information We Collect

We collect very little personal information, and only through your ordinary use of the site:

  • Log and usage data. Our hosting provider automatically records standard web server logs when you visit — IP address, browser type, referring page, and pages viewed. This is normal for any website and is used for security and keeping the site running.
  • Cookies. We use Google Analytics, which sets cookies to help us understand how visitors use the site (pages viewed, time on site, general location, device type). See the Cookies and Tracking section below for more detail.
  • Feedback. If you submit feedback via the site or email us, we capture your name and email address so we can respond. This is deleted once the feedback has been actioned.

We do not run user accounts, do not process payments, and do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information (health, race, religion, etc.).

How We Use Information

We use the limited information above only to:

  • Keep the site secure and functioning correctly
  • Respond to emails you send us
  • Understand, in aggregate, how the site is used, so we can improve it

We do not use your information for targeted advertising, and we do not sell it.

Cookies and Tracking

We use Google Analytics to understand, in aggregate, how people use the site — which pages are popular, roughly where visitors are coming from, and what devices they use. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to do this.

We don't use advertising cookies, and we don't use Google Analytics data to identify you individually or to serve you ads.

Some pages include embedded YouTube videos. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, which means no cookies are set unless you actually press play. If you play a video, YouTube/Google may set cookies to support playback and their own video statistics — these are controlled by Google, not us. You can read YouTube's own cookie policy for more detail.

Google processes this data under its own privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser settings.

Sharing Your Information

We do not sell or rent personal information. We may share limited information with:

  • Our hosting provider (IONOS), who processes server logs as part of running the site
  • Google, which processes analytics data via Google Analytics on our behalf
  • Law enforcement or regulators, only if legally required

We do not run advertising on the site and do not share information with ad networks or data brokers.

Data Retention

We keep server logs and Google Analytics data only as long as necessary for security, troubleshooting, and understanding site usage.

Name and email address submitted with feedback are kept only until that feedback has been actioned, at which point they're deleted from our records.

Children's Privacy

The site isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 (or under 16 in the UK/EEA, where that threshold applies). If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Your Privacy Rights (UK / EEA Visitors)

If you're in the UK or EEA, UK GDPR / GDPR gives you rights over information we hold about you, including the right to access, correct, or request deletion of it, and to object to certain processing. To exercise these, email privacy@totparchive.co.uk.

California Privacy Rights

This policy is posted in part to comply with the California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA), which requires operators of commercial websites to disclose what personal information is collected and how it's used — covered above.

We do not sell personal information, so opt-out-of-sale rights don't apply. As a matter of practice — regardless of whether the California Consumer Privacy Act's thresholds apply to a site of this size — we'll honour reasonable requests from California residents to:

  • Know what personal information (if any) we hold about you
  • Delete personal information we hold about you
  • Be free from discrimination for making either request

To make a request, email privacy@totparchive.co.uk. We may need to verify your identity before acting on it, and we'll respond within one month.

Do Not Track

The site doesn't currently respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals, as no common standard for interpreting them has been adopted industry-wide.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision, and material changes will be noted on this page.
