TOTP was at its peak, achieving some of its highest-ever viewing figures. Colour television was becoming the standard across the television landscape, and so the previous colour TOTP titles were starting to appear dated. Consequently, the classic "Whole Lotta Love" theme tune by CCS was introduced alongside a new opening title sequence and a new, curvy, and stylised "Top of the Pops" logo.
There were various iterations of this title sequence, which remained in use until 1973 when the iconic Top of the Pops circular logo was introduced. The opening title sequence featured video footage of the artists appearing on the specific episode, accompanied by shots of women moving around (in and out of helicopters and cars, in a rather unusual manner), dancing, followed by a countdown from Number 30 to Number 1, and finally, the updated TOTP logo.
