At the start of 1995 guest celebrity presenters had become the customary practice, and the antiquated studio set and title sequence introduced in October 1991 was looking out of place. The “year-zero” presentation package appeared dated, prompting new executive Ric Blaxill to determine that TOTP needed a new identity. Cue industrial metal-ridged floors, and a new TOTP logo embossed on a golden plate, alongside "Red Hot Pop", the new theme tune, by Vince Clarke. The revamped TOTP opening titles seamlessly integrated humans and music, presenting the concept of statuesque figures ascending towards the top of the charts. Each figure traversed in shot, with one figure raising a metallic disc bearing the newly incorporated TOTP logo, akin to a trophy. These titles were meticulously crafted through a 16mm live-action shoot employing a turntable, models, and tangible props, including sound speakers, headphones, and an early microphone.
In the summer of 1997, Chris Cowey assumed the role of Executive Producer, leading to the departure of the “golden mic” celebrity presenters and the introduction of a regular lineup of Radio 1 DJs and television personalities. During this period, the opening titles remained, all bar, with silence now, or if we were lucky, the beginning of the first performance on the show. At the same time, "Red Hot Pop" was dropped from the chart rundown during the programme, and a song currently in the chart that week was played over the Top 20 chart rundown, now narrated by Mark Goodier out of vision. Around this time Cowey also started to tweak the studio set, removing some of the TOTP logo banners, and lightening the studio with some brighter sets and lights.
In July 1997, a variant title sequence, featuring the TOTP pill logo (which initially made its appearance with the introduction of TOTP2 in September 1994) positioned atop a building, was introduced; this logo was first seen as an end-production still, and would then be used for the closing titles up until April 1998.
May 1998 would see yet another TOTP rebrand, but one which incorporated elements from Top of the Pops past alongside a familiar theme tune...
